Policy oriented research to achieve land degradation neutrality

ICoN SLM is the International Consortium of Science and Knowledge Networks on Sustainable Land Management. The Consortium published in 2015, soon after the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adoption, a document recommending the key research priorities to achieve SDG target 15.3 on land degradation neutrality (LDN). According to the Consortium, « the independent scientific community underscores the need to address LDN by developing research which : i) highlights the most pressing research topics to combat land degradation/desertification and moves towards sustainable land management (SLM); ii) demonstrates the interlinkage between and the complementarities of various research topics; and iii) incorporates cross-sectoral, transdisciplinary approaches in order to have an effect on the ground ». Indeed, the Consortium establishes key research priorities in support of land-based responses to land degradation and adaptations to climate change, divided into 3 thematic modules :

• Knowledge-based negotiations and decision support models, tools and methods for preventing and combating land degradation and land-based adaptation to climate change;
• Monitoring and assessing the biophysical impacts of land degradation neutrality (LDN);
• Monitoring and assessing the transboundary social, economic and cultural impacts and risks of land degradation and the effects of SLM in a globalizing world.

As a conclusion, the Consortium calls for « putting land degradation neutrality into practice », by operationalizing the thematic research modules.

ICoN SLM is a network of networks founded by DNI, WOCAT and GNDRI. Since its launch in Windhoek on September 2013 during UNCCD CoP11, DNI has been very active in its implementation process.

ICoN SLM est le Consortium indépendant des réseaux de recherche et de savoirs sur la dégradation des terres, la désertification et la gestion durable des terres. Peu de temps après l’adoption des Objectifs de Développement durable (ODD) début août 2015, le Consortium a publié des recommandations sur les axes prioritaires de recherche qui permettront d’atteindre la cible 15.3 des ODD : la neutralité en matière de dégradation des terres. Le Consortium présente trois modules de recherche thématiques, à travers lesquels il promeut :

• l’adoption d’outils et de méthodes pour prévenir et lutter contre la dégradation des terres et le changement climatique;
• mesurer et évaluer les impacts biophysique de la neutralité en matière de dégradation des terres;
• mesurer et évaluer les impacts et les risques sociaux, économiques et culturels transfrontaliers de la dégradation des terres, ainsi que les effets de la gestion durable des terres au niveau global.

Le Consortium conclue par un appel à mettre en oeuvre la neutralité en matière de dégradation des terres, en rendant opérationnels les modules thématiques de recherche.
